PAT Testing Course Highlights
Every course we deliver is taught by our resident PAT Testing Expert – Tim James. Whilst others might claim to be experts, Tim has been involved in the business of PAT Testing since the mid 1980s, and teaching people to carry out PAT Testing for more than 30 years. This is not a lecture, but a practical, hands-on training event. Learn what you need to learn without getting bogged down in irrelevant theory. Put into practice what you’ve learned straight away with our hands-on practical. Other courses might claim to be ‘practical’ but then on the day you’ll test a toaster and a lamp if you’re lucky! On our course you’ll complete a circus of different exercises, designed to encompass whole range of different scenarios, testing 35-40 items each using a variety of different industry standard testers.

All of our courses follow the very latest information – not just the IET 5th edition Code of Practice but also the latest British Standards (BS EN 50699 and 50678) as well as the latest information from HSE and PATTA. Tim James, your tutor, was part of the team that updated the IET Code of Practice and in fact wrote much of the technical content in that book!
Of course it’s not just enough to know the subject, you need to be able to put the information across in a meaningful and helpful way. You’ll be familiar with the quote from Einstein which goes ‘If you can’t explain something simply, then you don’t understand it well enough yourself.’ If you’re going to invest in a PAT Testing course, then make sure you spend a day with someone who is passionate about the subject and knows how to teach it in a way which is enjoyable, friendly, easy to follow, and relevant.

Meet your Tutor!
Each one of our courses is taught by Tim James, BA (Hons) MIET.
Tim has a lifetime’s experience in the PAT Testing Industry, first learning to carry out the task whilst working as a science technician in 1986. He’s worked in industry, local and central governments as well as his own commercial PAT Testing business. Tim is Standards Director of PATTA (the Portable Appliance Testing Trade Association) and worked with the IET to update the latest Code of Practice – writing most of the technical content in the 5th edition.

Good to Know!
We do not have a team of un-named ‘instructors’ teaching our courses. We don’t teach 15 different subjects, we teach people how to carry out PAT Testing, and we specialise in this area. It’s frustrating when we hear of other courses where the instructor turns out to be an expert in plumbing or carpentry (not that we have anything against those trades) but has no actual experience of PAT Testing, just what they’ve read in a text book.
Booking on one of our courses means that you will be taught by an industry leader – someone who has been passionate about PAT Testing for nearly 40 years and has a lifetime’s experience to share with each and every group.

Common Questions About PAT Testing Courses
Explore answers to the most frequently asked questions about our PAT Testing courses to help you make an informed decision.
What is included in the PAT Testing course?
Our course covers the fundamentals of electrical safety, hands-on testing techniques, and compliance with UK regulations. It’s designed to teach you what you need to know to be able to carry out PAT Testing, either in your own organisation to save money or as a way to make money by PAT Testing for other people.
Do I need prior experience to enroll?
No prior experience is necessary. Our courses are designed for beginners and experienced professionals alike. You don’t need to be a qualified electrician, you need to be willing to learn and have some common sense!
How long does the certification last?
In order to carry out PAT Testing you need to be COMPETENT and this is what our course will give you. The certificate does not have a specific expiry date on, and as long as you carry out PAT Testing regularly, you shouldn’t need to renew. If you do want an update, or a refresher, then we’d recommend doing the course again in 3-5 years, but it’s not a legal requirement.
Why is your course (slightly) more expensive than others that I've seen?
Our resident expert Tim James was one of the first people in the UK to teach PAT Testing as a subject, but now it seems everyone is jumping on the band-wagon and offering courses and proclaiming themselves to be an expert. An unnamed instructor who normally teaches ladder safety or plumbing but has read a few books on PAT Testing is not going to be as inspiring as someone who’s been passionate about the subject for nearly 40 years!
Yes, our courses are a little more expensive but they are not cheap to put on! We hire large training rooms in high quality venues – there is LOT of practical so we need the space. We’ve seen other courses advertised where people sit around a meeting room table in a Travelodge or Premier Inn, but whilst that’s fine for a 2 hour meeting, it’s not ideal for a full day of practical training!
Also, remember that we provide FREE course materials (no need to buy expensive text books) and ongoing support, and all of our venues provide lunch, snacks and free flowing hot drinks all included in the fee!
Yes we recognise this is an investment, but saving a few quid on the course fee, but not learning what you need to know is going to cost you more in the long run.
Can I save money by testing my own equipment
Absolutely! Many peoeple come on our course and save money by testing the equipment in their own workplaces. We can provide you with all of the equipment registers and record keeping information that you need to remain compliant, and we can recommend suitable PAT Testing equipment which is simple and quick to use, and doesn’t cost a fortune. Spoiler alert, our advice is always to keep it simple!
Can I earn money after the course by testing for other people!
100% yes! A lot of people who complete this course find they have a valuable skill once they are qualified! If you know anyone who plays in a band, has a couple of rental properties, runs a mobile hairdressing business or who hires out bouncy castles (the list goes on and on and on) then at some point they will need their equipment PAT Testing. There’s no reason at all why you shouldn’t earn some money helping them out, and the more you do, the better at it you will be!
Some people who complete our course go on to start viable PAT Testing businesses. Even in the current economic climate, there is still money to be made in the PAT Testing industry, provided that you go about things the right way. We can help!
